Abbey Pumping Station

Abbey Beam Engine

Explore Leicester's industrial, technological and scientific heritage and relive the might, power and beauty of Victorian engineering at Abbey Pumping Station.

Opened in 1891, Abbey Pumping Station was built to pump Leicester's sewage to the treatment works at Beaumont Leys and be part of a grand scheme to make Leicester a healthier place. The museum exhibits range from beautifully decorated Victorian beam steam engines, to exhibitions on light and optics, historic transport and public health.
