Buxton Museum and Art Gallery

The museums collections include:

Geology - carboniferous limestone fossils from the Peak District collected between 1900 and 1950;

Palaeontology - Ice Age animal bones and teeth from caves throughout the Peak District;

Archives - the papers and libraries of Professor Sir William Boyd Dawkins and Dr J.W. Jackson, geologists associated with the county and with the Manchester Museum;

Photographs - including the Board collection of images of Buxton;

Local social history and ephemera;

Randolph Douglas 'House of Wonders' collection from Castleton which includes a huge collection of locks and keys and some very unusual Houdini material;

Fine art collection - mainly 19th and 20th century works in watercolours, oils and prints, including works by Brangwyn, Chagall, Chahine and their contemporaries.

Derbyshire Police Collection - uniforms, objects, photographs and a Norton Commander motorbike.

Opening Times

Monday: Closed (except summer Bank Holidays)

Tuesday to Friday: 9.30am to 5.30pm

Saturday: 9.30am to 5pm

Sundays and Bank Holidays from Easter to 30 September: 10.30am to 5pm


Admission is free.

Education Programmes

Schools are welcome to visit us and are encouraged to take part in our 'Time Detectives', 'Romans in Derbyshire', 'Art Explorers' and 'Arresting Solutions' activities.
We can cater for all groups and all Key Stages. 


Children learn by handling real objects, observation, recording, and drawing, working in pairs, groups and as a class. Booking is essential, and there is a small charge.
